Sunshine and Vitamin D

For the past few days we have been experiencing some sunny days which have been excellent for outdoor activities. Although it is important to wear sunscreen and manage your exposure to the sun, it is important to note that actually sunlight help us in producing vitamin D. You may know this fact but, do you know what vitamin D does in your body? The main role associated with vitamin D is that it helps the body absorb calcium and aids in keeping a balance of calcium and phosphate in the body. Other functions of vitamin D include reducing inflammation, it functions in our nerves and muscles, and helps in maintaining adequate cell growth in our bodies.

When an individual suffers from vitamin D deficiency, they could experience rickets or osteomalacia. Rickets is more commonly seen in children and it results in a softening and deformation of the bones. Osteomalacia is seen in adults more commonly and results in a weakening of the bones. These two diseases are rarely seen in our modern age since there are articles of food that we purchase that are fortified with vitamin D. However, fish and more importantly fatty fish are the ones that have the most content of vitamin D from a natural source.

Vitamin D has an important role in our bodies, and with the nice weather it is important that we take care of our skin. While sunlight helps un in producing vitamin D it is important to protect the skin from the same rays and limit or manage the exposure to the sun. Be smart, protect your skin and we hope you have a great day.
